1. When did you start racing and why?
I started racing mountain bikes in 2006 after moving to Boise, Idaho. I fell in love with climbing and experiencing the challenges of racing on terrain that had surprises around every corner.
2. What makes you love cycling so much?
The landscapes and natural beauty of this world are best experienced by bicycle…but if you want to ride into the concrete jungle, who’s going to stop you?!
3. What different cycling disciplines do you participate? Race or recreation?
There’s just something about digging deep to crest a hill or powering it through that finish line that makes racing enjoyable and rewarding. Although I got started on the mountain, I am explicitly a road racer now.
4. What do you take in your jersey on long rides?
Energy bar/gel and cell phone. Dates are a great snack.
5. What piece of your cycling gear(clothing, wheels, anything) is your favorite?
I do not switch out my gear unless it is broken so I honestly do not know if I would like other equipment better. I take great pride when wearing my Headwind jersey.
6. Which pro cyclist will you cheer for in the pro peloton?
I always find myself rooting for Peter Sagan. He is so strong and consistent. His presence puts all other riders on notice.
7. Which pro cyclist do you think your style is most like?
Spartacus! Fabian Cancellara is a locomotive…just powering through the pain.
8. What do you eat after a long ride or race?
Mixed nuts, PB&J, and bananas always hit the spot. I’m cheap.
9. What is your favorite race memory, what race was it and why do you remember it?
The last mountain bike race I competed in was in 2009 in New Zealand. It was the first time any bikes were allowed on the volcanic island of Rangitoto across the bay from Auckland. I raced the 50km course and finished 7th out of 435 entrants. I started approximately mid-pack so it was a lot of fun passing racer after racer and climbing up and over a volcano.
10. What advice do you give to your team member or a new team member?
Ride when you can; if you feel strong, go strong and push your limits. If you aren’t feeling it, let up and enjoy the ride.
11. What are your 2017 goals?
To implement team strategies to find some podium finishes for Team Headwind. I hope to be the victor in some races and contribute to other team members’ successes in others.
12. When you aren’t pedaling your bike what do you like to do?
Walks with my family, playing some soccer, trail running with the dog, Chicago-style pizza, and imbibing some quality micro-brews make for the perfectly sculpted weekend.
